FORKS (National Weather Service) The heaviest snow fall of the winter is expected to hit the region of eastern North Dakota starting tonight between 6 and 7 p.m.

The winter storm will dump a foot of snow or more near the North Dakota/South Dakota border.

Grand Forks National Weather Service Meteorologist Al Volker says the Valley City and Fargo area could see 9 to 12 inches of snow and the snow fall amounts will be heaviest further south of Interstate 94 and taper off north of Highway 200 to the Canadian border where only 3 inches of snow is expected.

The Bismarck National Weather Service says snow fall amounts from Carrington southwest to Bismarck could reach 6 to 9 inches of snow and about 9 inches from Jamestown southwest to Linton. Stutsman County is in a blizzard warning from 3 p.m. Tuesday to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Winds could gust in excess of 35 miles per hour in the Jamestown area.

The snow is expected to begin Tuesday afternoon, with the heaviest snow occurring Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, says the weather service. Snow and winds should taper off Wednesday afternoon.

Travel will become dangerous, if not impossible, due to visibility near zero at times.
