(NewsDakota.com)- Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal won the District 5 girls basketball championship last night at the Civic Center preventing a three-peat for the Ellendale Cardinals, by a tally of 62-52.

It appeared early that the depth of the Cardinals would be able to wear down the Rebels in the end, but that proved to not be the case. PBK came out with the same intensity from tip to buzzer.

Morgan Thomas and Amanda Beckley jump-started the Rebels in the early going. Thomas finished the opening half with 11.

Ellendale controlled the first quarter taking a 13-10 lead into the first break following a three by Mariah Gustafson.

In the second quarter it was all Rebels, they outscored Ellendale by a score of 16-9.

Late in the game, with PBK beginning to take control Madilyn Bommersbach got hot for the Cardinals scoring 11 of their next 13 to trim a 10-point lead to two.

However, it wouldn’t be enough as Rebel Senior Kelly Carlson started to find it from the field scoring 11 of her 16 in the second half.

PBK left openings for Ellendale with some missed free-throws, but the careless turnovers began to come back and bit the Cardinals. They finished with 23 turnovers.

Beckley ended the night with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Beckley, Carlson, and Thomas combined for 50 of the Rebels 62.

Bommersbach and Shayna Mertz led Ellendale with 15.
