Doris Eleanor Johnson was born August 18, 1917 to Albert and Louise Johnson at the family farm east of Hannaford, North Dakota. Doris was the middle child of five, Loal, Marjorie, Doris, Howard and Bert. She attended grade school at the Stromme School. When she started her high school years in Hannaford she stayed in town working for room and board. She also worked at Hannaford Mercantile. Doris graduated in 1935 from Hannaford High School. That summer, not knowing what she wanted as a career, she took a job as a nanny to a special needs child for the Meldahl Family and moved into the family’s home at the Sheyenne Apartments. While working for the Meldahl’s, she met the love of her life, Roy Jacobson.
Roy and Doris were married on September 5, 1937 which was also Roy’s birthday. The couple lived in Valley City where Roy was part of the Sheyenne Ice Company. Their oldest son, Larry (Lawrence), was born when they lived in Valley City. They moved to Dazey in 1942. It was there that the other children were born, Chuck, Neil, Marshall and Nancy.
Doris was very active in the United Methodist Ladies Aid in Dazey. The ladies group at that time opened the “Little Store” located in the vacant lumber yard office. It was opened to raise money to add on to the Dazey United Methodist Church. Every Saturday there was a bake sale. Who knows how many loaves of brown bread she baked to help fulfill their goal of an addition on the church. She was also a longtime member of the Daisy Homemaker Club.
Roy and Doris moved to Valley City in 1997. Roy died February 13, 1998.
