(NewsDakota.com) All the higher ranked seeds were victorious on day one of the Class B District 5 boys basketball tournament Friday.

#4 Oakes 61 #5 LaMoure-Litchville-Marion 53

The Tornadoes had a lead as large as 17 at one point in this game, before the Loboes staged a strong second half rally. LLM was able to cut the Oakes lead down to one point on two occasions, but were unable to tie the game, nor take the lead.

Oakes, who shot 45 percent from the field, had a team 21 points from Jordan Cunningham. LLM saw Shay Ness put in a team high 14 points.

#2 Ellendale 59 #7 Midkota 43

The Cardinals had a 22-7 advantage after the first eight minutes and never looked back; even having a lead as much as 30 at one point. The Mustangs did rally in the fourth with a 14-4 run, but it wasn’t nearly enough to work their way back fully into the game.

Ellendale’s Luke Wertz had 14 points, while Lucas Hofer and Hunter White each had 12 points. Midkota had a pair of 13 point games from Laine Hoyt and Mason Smith.

#3 Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier 74 #6 Barnes County North 54

The Rebels and Bison battled in the early stages of this one, before EKM started to slowly pull away; having their largest lead of 29 points in the latter stages of the game.

Lane Hanson dropped in 30 points for EKM along with 17 rebounds. Allen Contreas scored 24 points for BCN.

Saturday’s play starts at 4:30 with a loser-out contest between Midkota and BCN. At 6, the first semifinal features Oakes and Carrington, with the second semifinal commencing around 7:30 with Ellendale and EKM.
