N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown Public Works Committee received a presentation on the current condition of the Jamestown Ice House Dam Thursday evening.
The committee heard information presented by Mandar Nangare with Barr Engineering. Mandar stated that the dam had not been repaired or serviced since it was built in the 1800’s, but has been inspected by the North Dakota State Water Commission since 1943.
Nangare also reported erosion affecting the structure’s concrete causing cracks and seepage. Damage to the spillway was also pointed out. Nangare stated that the city could either do nothing, repair it, replace it or redesign it. The information was passed on to the council so action could be taken.
Committee Chairman Steve Brubbaken pointed out that the council would need some more information before committing to anything.
Greg Spenningsby with the Stutsman County Water Resource Board stated that he would bring the information presented back to the board for consideration as well. Spenningsby reported that removing the dam could have adverse affects to the area.
Spenningsby pointed out that this would cause issues with mosquitos and wildlife.
The committee made a recommendation to send out requests for proposals for a feasibility study on the project.
