CITY (VCSUVikings.com)- The women and men were both winners Saturday in an NSAA doubleheader. For the 2nd time this season the women routed The Warriors 99-51. After trailing for most of the 1st and 2nd half the men came from behind to get the victory 65-59. Friday night The Vikings head to La Crosse, Wisconsin for a match up with Viterbo. The Valley City State women’s basketball team shot 57 percent from the field Saturday afternoon on their way to a 99-51 win over Waldorf University.
The Vikings controlled the game from the get-go, leading 35-8 after the first quarter of play. VCSU’s largest first-half lead came at 53-20 midway through the second quarter.
VCSU had four players in double figures, led by Georgia Williams with 26. Lexi Lennon added 22 points to go along with five assists. Kennedy Henningsgard and Alli Vandal scored 15 and 14 points respectively. Taylor Frickle led Waldorf in scoring with 14
The Vikings did a great job sharing the basketball assisting on 24 of their 36 baskets. The pesky Viking defense forced 25 turnovers while only committing 15 of their own. VCSU dominated the rebounding battle 36-17, including 15 offensive rebounds.
With the win the Vikings improve to 17-7 overall and 8-3 in the NSAA. Waldorf falls to 2-21 overall and 0-11 in the NSAA.
MBB VCSU 65 Waldorf University 59
The Valley City State men’s basketball team ripped off an 17-2 run late in the game Saturday as the Vikings rallied for a 65-59 victory over Waldorf University.
VCSU trailed 50-41 with 10 minutes to go, but outscored the Warriors 17-2 over the next eight minutes of play to build a 58-52 lead en route to the conference victory in Valley City. Jayden Ferguson started the run with a 3-pointer and capped it with a basket inside, putting the Vikings up six with 1:48 remaining. Waldorf would get no closer than four the rest of the way.
The win completed a weekend sweep for Valley City State, which swept both sides of the men’s and women’s doubleheaders against Waldorf on Saturday and Mayville State on Friday.
The Viking men improve to 14-11 overall and 6-5 in the North Star Athletic Association. Waldorf drops to 9-15 overall and 5-6 in conference play. The Vikings and Warriors entered the game in a four-way tie for fourth place in the NSAA standings. The Vikings are now alone in fourth place, while the Warriors are in a two-way tie for sixth.
Jayden Ferguson scored a game-high 27 points for the Vikings. Ferguson went 12-for-19 from the field, 2-for-3 on 3’s and also pulled down six rebounds. His last basket Saturday gave Ferguson 1,550 career points and moved him past Duane Baumgartner (1,549 points) for fourth on the VCSU all-time scoring list.
Rashad Satahoo added 18 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Vikings. Austin Dunbar scored nine points, and Ellwood Ellenson had four points – including a monster putback jam – 10 rebounds and four blocks. Point guard Jason Ralph scored seven points and had two assists.
Waldorf was led by 20 points from Brady Kuchinka, who knocked down four 3-pointers. Michael Morgan had a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, and June Prowell scored 12 points as well.
The Warriors held a 32-26 halftime advantage and led by as many as 10 points in the second half at 39-29. VCSU led 2-0 early but would not lead again until 4:40 remaining when Jason Ralph’s two free throws capped 11 straight points and put the Vikings up 52-50.
VCSU shot 42 percent from the field (25-59), 25 percent on 3’s (4-16) and 79 percent at the line (11-14). Waldorf shot 41 percent from the field (24-59) but made just 35 percent in the second half. The Warriors were 4-13 on 3’s (31 percent) and went 7-for-11 at the line.
Waldorf held a 38-34 edge on the glass, including a 10-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. Waldorf had six assists, 16 turnovers, five blocks and five steals. The Vikings finished with nine assists, just 10 turnovers, five blocks and four steals.
