Harshman, 86, of Valley City, ND, died December 11, 2016 at her home in Valley City with her family by her side. The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 AM Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Valley City with Rev. JoAnne Moeller officiating. Interment will be in the Zion Getchell Cemetery north of Valley City. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Friday evening at the Lerud-Schuldt-Mathias Funeral Home.
Frances Luella Froelich, was born January 3, 1930, in Valley City, the daughter of Charles and Gertrude (Brobst) Froelich. She attended grade school at Getchell School #3 northwest of Valley City and graduated from Valley City High School in 1948.
In July of 1948, Frances started working for Montgomery Wards in Valley City. She worked there for two years. In September 1950, she started working for First National Bank of Valley City as a bookkeeper. After this, she became a teller and was later promoted to head teller; she was there for 5 ½ years.
Frances married Melvin Harshman on July 6, 1951, in Moorhead, MN. They made their home in Valley City. In the summer of 1956, Melvin and Frances and their daughter Marla moved to Billings, MT. Frances worked for Midland National Bank of Billings for 2 years as a bookkeeper. They moved back to Valley City in July of 1958, and their son Michael was born in August. In 1961, Frances started working for First National Bank of Valley City again. She worked there for 2 ½ years as a teller. In September 1964, Frances started working for Fidelity Savings & Loan in Valley City. Fidelity was later merged with Midwest Federal Savings Bank of Minot, ND. She worked at Fidelity-Midwest Federal, as a teller, computer operator, loan processor, assistant treasurer, assistant branch manager and as a loan interviewer for 25 ½ years. She retired from Midwest Federal on January 31, 1990.
In 2012, she was diagnosed with kidney failure and started dialysis 3 days a week in Jamestown. During that time she lived with Marla and Mark. She enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, visiting with family and friends, her Craft Club ladies and reading.
Frances leaves behind her daughter Marla (Mark) Boom of Valley City; a son, Michael (Laurie) Harshman, Grand Forks; three grandsons, Adam (Melissa) Harshman, Duluth, MN, Marshall (Ashley) Boom, Valley City, and Jared Harshman, Grand Forks; 5 great grandchildren, Kayleen, Oliviah, and Cole Harshman, and Mercer and Korbyn Boom; brother John (Sandra) Froelich, Valley City; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Marjorie Harshman, Jamestown, Louise Harshman, Binford, Darrell Johnson, Fargo, and Darlene Froelich, Bismarck; many nieces and nephews, her special buddy Magnum and our new friend Kim Cook from Hospice.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Melvin, who passed away 14 years to the day (Dec. 11, 2002), sisters Lillian Franklin, Margaret Wittenberg, and Joyce Johnson, a brother, James Froelich, brothers-in-law Carl Wittenberg and Jerome Franklin, and sister-in-law Janet Froelich.
