N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Competitive gaming has taken over the world and will now be making a home at the University of Jamestown.
Electronic sports, also known as eSports, is a competition between players and teams using video games. The announcement was made by the University of Jamestown that they would be adding an eSports team in the Spring of 2017.
Donovan Gibson is the Assistant Director of Admission at the University of Jamestown.
New Head Coach Josh Knutson stated that all games will be played on PC and the team would play several different games competitively.
The overall response to eSports at the University has been positive. The program will be run like any other athletic organization on campus with the team meeting and practicing weekly.
Chris Hoke is the director of eSports at the University.
The University will be competing in the National Association of Collegiate eSports (NAC), which includes teams like Alfred Morris and Florida State University. Teams will compete over the internet and broadcast tournaments and games over the streaming website Twitch.
The sport will also create new scholarship opportunities, showing the University’s seriousness about the new program. Gibson pointed out that eSports has proven to have helped players generate higher test scores and become more academically focused.
