City, ND (VCSUvikings.com)- Valley City State University volleyball jumped ahead right away taking the win for set one of the match, but then fell to Dickinson state in the next three sets allowing the Blue Hawks to record the 3-1 victory: 25-21, 22-25, 18-25, 29-27. 

Blue Hawks Brenna Hansen led the team with 19 kills, and helped improve the Blue Hawks record to 7-13 overall and 1-1 in the North Star Athletic Association.

The Vikings now drop to 7-14 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

The Vikings and Blue Hawks started out battling right away. In set one the score was back-and-forth until VCSU was able to pull ahead with a four-point lead earning them the 25-21 win, while hitting .464 as a team.

Again the battle continued in set two, as the score remained close throughout. The Blue Hawks were able to come out on top with a 25-22 victory as they hit at .412, with the Viking not far behind as they hit at .344 during set two.

Going into set three of the match 1-1, Dickinson state was able to jump out ahead of VCSU early creating a seven-point gap in the score that would allow them to keep the lead the entire set. The Blue Hawks grabbed the win 25-18 for set three giving them a 2-1 lead over the Vikings going into set four.

Set four took extra point in order to decide the winner. The Vikings closed in on the Blue Hawk’s short lead late in the match as the teams traded points down the end stretch. In the end, the Blue Hawks came out on top 29-27, with back to back kills: one from Ellie Hanser and the other from Tessa Sain.

Jaycee George led the Vikings with 24 digs and three service aces. Taylor Sharp also led the Vikings with 12 Kills, while Autumn Johnson and Leah Ruter also recorded 10 each. Taylor Balkan was the team leader in assists with 25, and Meagan Schwarzrock had 18.

Dickinson State’s Shaylee Singleton recorded 17 digs, and Kaitlyn Anderson had 16. Danielle Boyette tallied 27 assists, while Keera Stookey tallied 15. Along with Brenna Hansens 19 kills, Danielle Boyette recorded 12 and Tessa Sian had 11.

Up next: VCSU hosts Morningside College in a non-conference match Friday, Oct. 14.  Dickinson State will be back home hosting Presentation College Tuesday, Oct. 11.
