CITY, ND – (NewsDakota.com) A majority of the people who live in Valley City support the plan to get a School Resource Officer back in the school district soon.

The district had a school resource officer a few years ago until funding from a grant and other entities was no longer available.

Police Chief Fred Thompson says funding for the position would have to be permanent before the city would pursue hiring an officer.

Valley City School board member Val Mortiz supports getting on officer back in the schools.

Valley City Schools Superintendent Josh Johnson says teachers also support the idea of having the officer in the elementary schools.

The city of Valley City has committed three years of funding for the program according to Police Chief Thompson.

The cost share ratio between the city and the school district was not available during the September 21st school board meeting.

More details about the proposed cost share ratio between the city and the school district will be released in October.
