Valley City State University volleyball team posted a 3-1 record this weekend during the Clarke University Tournament in Dubuque, Iowa.

VCSU split a pair of matches on Friday before winning both its matches on Saturday. The Vikings have now won four of their last five matches as they improve to 5-8 overall this season.

VCSU’s one loss on the weekend came in a five-setter against Indiana University-South Bend. Following that match, the Vikings downed Calumet College of St. Joseph in straight sets; defeated Judson University in four sets; and swept Trinity International University to close out the tournament.

Valley City State freshman Taylor Sharp was named to the All Tournament Team.

Up next: Valley City State (5-8, 1-0 NSAA) resumes North Star Athletic Association conference play with two home NSAA matches this weekend. The Vikings host No. 19-ranked Bellevue at 7 p.m. on Friday, and then host Presentation College on Saturday at 5 p.m.

IU South Bend 3, VCSU 2
The Vikings went the distance in the first match of the tournament but lost in five sets, 25-23, 22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 11-15.

Taylor Sharp and Autumn Johnson each had 12 kills to lead the Viking attack. Taylor Balkan tallied 22 assists and Jaycee George had 38 digs in the loss.

VCSU 3, Calumet College 0
The Vikings made quick work of Calumet College in the second match of the tournament, taking home a sweep: 25-14, 25-6, 25-13.

VCSU hit .377 as a team, tallying 32 kills and just six errors in 69 attacks. Sharp and Megan Johnson each had seven kills, and Sharpe added four aces. Meagan Schwarzrockassisted on 14 kills, and George posted 16 more digs.

VCSU 3, Judson University 1
Valley City State opened Saturday play with a four-set victory over Judson University by scores of 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 25-16.

Autumn Johnson had a big match with 13 kills and a .257 hitting percentage for the Vikings. Sharp and Clarissa Olson each posted eight kills.

Balkan led the way with 27 assists and Schwarzrock had 19. Three Vikings had double-digit digs led by George with 31, Darrien Cantelo with 15, and Hailie Wilds with 11.

VCSU 3, Trinity International 0
The Vikings hit the lights out in the final match, posting a .330 hitting percentage in a sweep of Trinity International: 33-31, 25-19, 25-20.

Valley City State posted 43 kills and just nine errors in 103 attacks.

Six Vikings had five or more kills in the match, led by nine from Nicolette Bloomer and eight each by Hailie Wilds and Megan Johnson. Bloomer posted her nine kills in 13 attacks as she hit .692 in the match.

Taylor Balkan had 17 assists and Meagan Schwarzrock posted 16. George again led the Vikings with 20 digs. Both Hailie Wilds and Schwarzrock had 10 digs each.
