N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Joann and Helmut Albrecht have announced that a $300 art scholarship will be awarded to a UJ art major annually in honor of their daughter Barbara McClintock.
Barbara is from Jamestown, and attended UJ from 1973-1976 where she studied music, art, and literature.
“Helmut and I wanted to celebrate Barbara’s birthday this year (May 6) by establishing a scholarship in her name to be perpetual and to encourage young artists in their studies at the university,” she said. “We were at Voorhees Chapel, attending the honors day ceremony, and saw that the art department gave an outstanding art student award for 2015-16, and decided we needed to do something similar,” she added.
McClintock is a children’s book writer and illustrator. She has collaborated with other writers as well, and her own books are profusely illustrated. She has done illustrations for many children’s book authors, including Robert Louis Stevenson’s “A Children’s Garden of Verses” among others. Her own include: “Waggleby of Fraggle Rock,” “The Little Princess,” “Danielle,” “Dahlia,” “Cinderella,” “The Prog Frince,” “The Heartaches of a French Cat,” “12 Kinds of Ice,” “My Grandfather’s Coat,” her Adele and Simon series that takes Adele and Simon to countries around the globe and many more.
The guidelines for the Barbara McClintock scholarship will be outlined by the first of the year, and the award will be given during UJ’s honors day ceremony in April.
