JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A group of concerned citizens have posted pictures in city parks of the James River focused on the algae on the water with the question “Does it really have to be this way?”

The concern comes from a group only known as the “Friends of the James River.” A sign was posted in Nickeus Park in June, calling out the Jamestown City Council, Street Department, Parks & Recreation Department, U.S. Core of Engineers and the State of North Dakota for the high buildup of what appears to be algae in the river.

But according to Pipestem Dam Manager Bob Martin, the “algae” is not actually algae at all.

Martin pointed out that the Duck Weed is also beneficial to the wildlife that inhabit the streams.

Martin stated that the Duck Weed was not noxious or hazardous to animals or humans, unlike blue-green algae, which he said is not present in the James River. You can contact Martin if you have any questions at 701-252-7666.
