City Post 60 Legion baseball team wrapped up its regular season over the weekend. Friday the team traveled to Wahpeton for a pair of games and Saturday made the trip to Fargo for a game.  Post 60 would come out on the loosing end of all 3 of the games.  Friday they dropped the region game 6-4, and the non region game 7-0. Saturday VC would drop their region game to the Fargo Jets by score of 3-0.

Friday 7-15

Game 1 VC lost 6-4, region game
In a well played game all around it came down to little things that ended up costing Post 60 the win.  Both teams picked up the same amount of hits and both committed 1 error, but in the end the runs scored is what mattered and Wahpeton was able to be ahead on that. The free bases is what was the big difference in the game.  Wahpeton would give up only 1 free base while VC would allow 8 free bases to Wahpeton.

Wahpeton got 1 run in the second before VC would score 3 in 3rd only for Wahpeton to tie it up in their part of the 3rd.  Game would remain tied till the sixth when Wahpeton would put up 3 more runs.  Post 60 would only be able to get 1 run across in the seventh and the game ended 6-4.

Dalton Ondracek got the start for VC.  He went 5 innings giving up 5 runs(4 earned) on 4 hits while walking 5, hitting 3 and striking out 1 for the loss.

At the plate VC picked up 5 hits from 5 different players.  The big hits came from Nate Rodriguez and Reese Huschka who each hit a home run.

Coaches Comments:
“We played well today, well enough to have a chance to win the game. Ultimately it came down to giving up to many free stuff to them, and then getting hurt by a hit after gave them bases.”
“Dalton threw pretty good today.  I think he just ran out of some steam in the 6th there and lost some control.   He kept us in the game when offense was struggling and gave us that chance to win.”

Game 2 VC lost 7-0 non region game
Wahpeton jumped out to 3 big runs in the first inning of the game, and added 2 more in the 3rd and 5th for their 7 runs.  VC wouldn’t be able to get any runs across as they couldn’t come up with the big timely hit.

Stephan Brooks started for VC and went 4 innings giving up 5 runs(1 earned) on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2.

Sam Jenson, Tanner Thomsen and Brooks were the only 3 players to collect a hit in the game for VC.  Post 60 would however collect 7 walks in the game.

Saturday 7-16
VC lost 3-0 region game

A quick turn around for Post 60 as they traveled to Fargo to take on the Jets Saturday morning.  Fargo would take advantage of 2 VC errors in the first inning to pick up 2 runs.  Fargo would later add another run in the 6th to get to their 3 runs.  VC would not be able to get any runner across home plate to score and drop the game 3-0.

Nate Rodriguez got start for VC. He would go 6 innings giving up 3 runs(1 earned) on 3 hits while walking 4 and striking out 5 for the loss.

Offensively VC out hit the Jet 6 to 3.  Dawson Dietrich would go 3 for 3 on the day while Dalton Ondracek would pick up 2 hits to help the cause.

Coaches Comments:
“This is game we felt we could of had. Nate pitched good enough for us to win.  The 2 errors in the first inning hurt and put us in a hole to dig out of.”
“Fargo’s defense made some really good plays in the field that stopped some momentum we were creating, and that was a killer for us.”

Post 60 ends regular season with an 11-23 record and 6-10 region record.

VC next action will be Wednesday at the East Region tournament in West Fargo.  Time is yet to be determined as still games being played in region to determine seeding.
