N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Carrington Fire Department recently invested into new safety equipment that they will use moving forward.

According to Fire Chief Ken Wangen, new helmets were purchased with donations and a 75% matching grant from WSI North Dakota.

“Each Helmet is identified by the leather shield with the department name and the fire fighters last name.” Wangen stated.

Wangen mentioned that each helmet color has a different meaning. White helmets are for Fire Chiefs, Red helmets are for Captains and Officers and Black helmets are for firefighters. The helmets are a Cairns 1044 Traditional with Defender primary eye protection.

“These helmets are replacing helmets that were purchased in 1995. They have advanced safety protection and adjustable fit webbing along with the integrated eye protection.” Wagen pointed out.

The fire department is continuing to raise funds for other turnout gear including boots, coats, pants, hoods and gloves. The total cost will be around $3,000 per firefighter.

Individuals wanting to assist in raising funds for the department can send donations to:
