CITY (NewsDakota.com)–The Hi-Liner wrestling team had a successful trip to the Storhaug Invitational in Lisbon this past weekend.
Valley City scored 105 points, enough for sixth place in a tournament loaded with good Class B and out-of-state competition.
Brandon Larson won the Hi-Liners lone title at 195, defeating previously unbeaten and Class B’s top-ranked Jamison Jangula of Ellendale-Edgeley-Kulm by a 5-1 decision in the finals.
Shane Undem was a runner-up for the Hi-Liners at 138, defeating defending state Class B champion Cody Neumiller of New Salem 17-6 in the semifinals. He was beaten by Apple Valley, MN’s Dayton Racer in the finals. Racer is nationally ranked.
Zach Doty lost his first round match, then rallied for five straight wins and a third-place finish at 152. He defeated Hunter Mairs of Lisbon, Class B’s second-ranked wrestler, 5-1 in the third-place match.
Steven Horner was third at heavyweight, winning by fall in the third-place match, a win that allowed Valley City to secure a sixth-place finish. Steven Radermacher finished eighth at 160, rounding out the Hi-Liner placewinners.
Apple Valley won the tournament with 316 points, putting seven wrestlers in the finals. South Border was second with 189, followed by Oakes at 156, Lisbon at 135, and Sisseton, SD with 108. Valley City finished a point better than Napoleon.
The Hi-Liners host Devils Lake tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
