ND – (NewsDakota.com) Tarryn Justesen struck out 14 batters and Grace Scherr hit a solo home run Thursday as the HI-Liner softball team downed Grand Forks Central 6-3 in an EDC Tournament quarterfinal game.

Valley City built a 4-0 lead after Scherr’s home run in the second inning. Central cut the deficit to 4-3, but Justesen and the Hi-Liners shut the door the rest of the way and added two more runs for the final score of 6-3.

Scherr and Kacee White each had three hits for the Hi-Liners, who recorded 11 hits in the victory Thursday. Justesen pitched a complete game for her 12th win of the season. She allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out 14 Grand Forks batters.

The Hi-Liners (17-12 overall record) set the tone early with a big first inning. Justesen struck out the side in the top of the first, and then the Hi-Liner offense added three runs in the bottom of the inning for a quick 3-0 lead. After Central cut the lead to 4-3, Scherr and White had back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth inning to push the lead back to 6-3.

Top seed West Fargo also advanced with a 14-1 win over Devils Lake. West Fargo will play Grand Forks Red River in the semifinals after Red River defeated Fargo Davies, 9-6.

NOTES: Game 1 Is Out Of The Way, SOME Pressure Is Off, Still
Have Business To Attend To And Need To Win At Least 1 More
Game To Ensure A 2nd Straight State Tournament Birth, But
Odds Definitely Improved After This One.  Tarryn Justesen
Got It Started By Striking Out The Side Inthe Top Of The 1st
then really  Went To Work And Helped Herself By Adding 2
RBI’s In The Bottom of The 2nd Scoring MCKenna Taylor and
Heather Knutson  After McKenna Knocked In Kaceewhite Earlier
To Give The Hi-Linersthe 0-3 Lead After 1. In The Top Of The
2nd Tarryn Struck Put The Knight 4 batter  To Pick Up Where
She Left Off Before Allowing The 5 Knight Hitter To Reach On
A Single, Tarryn The Struck Out 1 More Then Induced A Popup
To 2nd Baseman Eliza Johnson To Finally Get Her Teammates
Involved.    After A Walk, A Mental Error And A Strikeout
Leadoff Batter Grace Scherr Hit A Solo Homerun To Extend The
Hi-Liner Lead.    Tarryn Struck Out The 1st 2 Knight Batters
In The Top Of The 3rd Before A Ground Ball And 2 Errors Put
The  Knight Leadoff Hitter On 3rd With 2 Outs.  A Nice
2strike Single To Left Scored The Knights Runner Before
Tarryn Induced A Popupto Herself For The 3rd Out.  Valley
City Went 1,2,3 In The 3rd To Leave The Score At 1-4.
Grand Forks Was Able To Manufacture 2 Runs With A Little
Help From The Hi-Liner Defense Before Tarryn Decided Enough
Was Enough And Struck Out 2more Knight Hitters To End The
Threat.  Valley City Scored 2 of There Own In The Bottom Of
The 4th With Courtney Lloyd Scoring And  Grace Scherr
Scoring Off RBI’s By Grace Scherr & Kacee White.   5 More
Strikeouts By Justesen Over The Last 3 Innings And Only Once
Really Threatened With A Runner Getting On And Past 1st
Base.  Unfortunately  The Hi-Liners Couldn’t Secure Any
Insurance Either, But Behind Justesens Arm We Secured This
Important 1st Round Win.
