CITY (NewsDakota.com) Whoever becomes the next Mayor of Valley City will have a lot of water issues to deal from Devils Lake to permanent flood protection for the city with once they take office.

Incumbent Bob Werkhoven said city officials and the community did a good job keeping the city dry in 2011. He says fear over Devils Lake and what will happen with the Tolna Coulee is on everyone’s mind.
Werhoven said, he and other city officials have worked with state and federal officials to secure funds to upgrade the city water treatment plant to treat higher sulfate levels once the start coming from Devils Lake after the east end outlet is up and running later this year.
Mayoral candidate Dean Ross says if elected, Devils Lake and the concern over water quality issues are extremely important to him as well. Ross said; “People to Save the Sheyenne” and members from the “Downstream Ad Hoc Committee” have done a good job studying and keeping a pulse on the situation in Devils Lake.
Ross also said; the commission should listen to city commissioner Matt Pedersen. He said, his work on trying to address permanent flood protection for the city as chairman of the Flood Task Force committee has been exceptional.

Ross and Werkhoven along with Ken Evenson and Duane Magnuson will be on the recall ballot in the Tuesday, January 24 election.
The polls will open at 8am and close at 7pm next Tuesday. The only polling place on Tuesday will be in the city commission chamber.
