(NewsDakota.com)-The Blue Jay basketball teams hosted Bismarck-St. Mary’s last night at Jerry Meyer Arena and for the fourth time in five games Jamestown left with a sweep.
The boys won their seventh in-a-row with a 82-74 victory over the Saints. Nate Willer and Arron Benson lead the way with 16 a piece. Danny Fischer added 15.
For most of the first-half the teams traded blows. The lead for the Jays kept fluctuating between one and four. When Jamestown would go up four, St. Mary’s would answer with a three. When Jamestown would go up three, St. Mary’s would answer with a two.
In the second half, the Blue Jays finally were able to pull away and build a 16-point advantage. The Saints pulled within five late in the contest at 77-72, but Fischer’s free throws again closed out an opponent.
Jamestown improves to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the WDA.
Kayla Thoele continues to play well for the Jays leading them in scoring again with a 17-point effort including the game clinching basket with :33 left. Thoele made a nice head fake, got the defender in the air, and raced by her for two points to put Jamestown up by three.
The Jays would hold onto that lead and knock off the Saints 60-56.
With eight minutes remaining in the game, the Jays had an 11-point lead and St. Mary’s most aggressive player Jarren Fallgatter was sent to the bench for the night with her fifth foul. However, her teammates responded pulling even with Jamestown.
St Mary’s made nine three-pointers in the game. “We knew they were a good three-point shooting team,” said Jays Head Coach Andy Skunberg. “Anytime you make nine of them, that’s getting it done.”
It wasn’t enough and Jamestown picked up their fourth win in five games following Thoele’s basket. The Blue Jays go to 4-6 on the season and 3-4 in the WDA.
