CITY, N.D. (VCSU) – Valley City State women’s basketball coach Jill DeVries announces the signing of Fargo Shanley guard Annie Swenson for the 2016-17 season. 

A 5-foot-6 sharpshooter, Swenson signed a letter of intent Wednesday to continue her education and basketball career at Valley City State University this fall. Swenson led North Dakota Class A girls basketball in made 3-pointers during the regular season as she helped Fargo Shanley High School to a 27-0 record, it’s third straight state title and a state-record 70 straight wins this season.

“We are so excited that Annie is going to be a Viking,” said DeVries. “She is the type of kid that does whatever it takes to make herself and her team successful. Annie is a winner and comes from one of the most successful girls basketball programs in North Dakota history. She understands what it takes to compete at a very high level.”

Swenson averaged 10.1 points per game during her senior season with the state champion Deacons. She shot 40 percent from 3-point range and led Class A girls basketball with 60 made 3-pointers during the regular season (2.9 per game).

“Annie has the ability to stretch defenses with her 3-point prowess, however, she can also score off the bounce and find open teammates,” said DeVries. 

Swenson is the daughter of Todd and Lynn Swenson. She plans to study business administration while at VCSU. Her coach at Fargo Shanley, Tim Jacobson, is a VCSU alum.

Valley City State University is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and is a conference member of the North Star Athletic Association. 

The Vikings finished the 2015-16 season with a 18-10 overall record and went 10-3 in conference play, tying for second in the NSAA regular season standings. VCSU has a .675 winning percentage (106-51) during DeVries’ last five seasons as head coach and have qualified for the NAIA National Tournament three times in that stretch.
