(NewsDakota.com) – Grocery retailer and wholesaler Supervalu says it plans to switch to cage-free eggs in all its stores by 2025 or sooner.

The Minnesota-based company says its decision reflects its commitment to improving animal welfare practices, but the transition will take time because of the limited supply of cage-free eggs.

Supervalu includes over 1,300 Save-a-Lot discount grocery stores nationwide. It also owns 200 traditional supermarkets, including Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Hornbachers, Shoppers and Shop n’ Save.

Steve Olson with the Minnesota Chicken and Egg Association of Minnesota says it costs more to produce cage free eggs and in the end that cost will be passed on to the consumer.

Olson also explains the cost it will take for producers to raise these eggs.

Other Minnesota-based companies with cage-free commitments include Target, General Mills and Schwan’s. Several other major food retailers nationwide are also making the switch.

Olson feels many of these companies are making the switch to cage free due to pressure from activists.
