Wegner, 87, of Jamestown, ND, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family Sunday evening, March 6, 2016 while under the care of JRMC hospice care.
Melvin Ervin Wegner was born July 3, 1928, the son of Gottfried and Bertha (Suko) Wegner. He attended school in Cusator Township. Melvin married Agnes Jawaski on June 11, 1949. They made their home on the farm where Melvin was born. They were grain and dairy farmers for many years. Melvin was township treasurer for 38 years and served on the Cusator Township School Board.
Melvin always farmed with John Deere equipment and in his retirement enjoyed collecting toy tractors and other John Deere memorabilia. One of Melvin’s favorite sayings at family gatherings was, “Look what I started.”
He is survived by his wife, Agnes; their eight children, Thora (Dale) Emerson, Christine (Floyd) Neys, Donald (Marla Montgomery) Wegner, John (Gail Shockley) Wegner, Maxine (Randy) Roberg, Vernon (Nancy Thompson) Wegner, Daniel (Shannon Scheidecker) Wegner, and Jerome (Jeanette Job) Wegner; 22 grandchildren, Michelle (Jason) Hoffer, Melissa (Pauline) Emerson-Froebe, Monica Emerson, Andrew (Leigh) Neys, Thomas (Tammy) Neys, Sara Neys (Dane) Mattern, Jean (Carl) Pierson, Ryan (Lacie) Wegner, Patrick Wegner, Michael (Paige) Wegner, Travis Wegner, Emily (John) Blattenbauer, Roger Roberg, Nathan Roberg, Tracy (Mike) Quinn, Ryan M. Wegner, Sheena Wegner, Donell Ard, Kyler (Lindsay) Wegner, Kami (fiancé, Rick Benke) Wegner, Jenny (Eric) Lee, and Heather (fiancé, Mitch Holmgren) Wegner; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clifford (Stella) Wegner and Elroy (Edress) Wegner; and sister, Violet Mae (Ernest “Bob”) Williams.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lorene (Ronald) Wanzek; and brother, David Wegner.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 12, 2016 at St. James Basilica, Jamestown, North Dakota.
Visitation: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday, March 11, 2016 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
Vigil: 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 11, 2016 at St. James Basilica, Jamestown.
Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown.
