Lake, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—-The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets held off Harvey-Wells County 48-44 to reach the District 7 title game versus top ranked Four Winds-Minnewaukan. The Rockets looked like they had the game under control with 4:38 remaining with a comfortable 45-33 lead, but the Hornets fought back on a 9-0 run and ultimately trailed by only 2 at 46-44 with under 20 seconds remaining. An offensive foul call on Brian Fike driving to the basket gave the ball back to the Rockets and 2 free throws from Jack Schaefer sealed the 48-44 victory. The Rockets who entered the tourney as the number 3 overall seed had 2 players share game high honors of 19 points including Schaefer. Ben Makay came off the bench and sparked the Rockets offense with 19 points, 17 of them in the first half. Schaefer added a team high 7 rebounds. The Hornets were paced by Payton Granger with 14 points and Trevor Schimke added 10 points and a game high 9 rebounds. The Hornets (9-12) came into the tourney as the number 2 seed and will play Benson County (6-14) at 5:30 Monday afternoon in a Region 4 qualification game.
Four Winds/Minnewaukan Indians 73 Dakota Prairie Knights 28
The top ranked team in class “B” basketball put on a defensive clinic versus the Knights of Dakota Prairie, forcing 32 turnovers and limiting the Knights to 31 percent shooting overall (9-29 shooting). The 45 point victory (73-28) for the Indians started early outscoring Dakota Prairie 19-7 in the opening quarter. Four Winds was paced by Koltin ThreeIrons game high 19 points, followed by Jason Feather with 18, and Steve Redfox with 13. The Indians recorded 18 steals in the game led by Redfox with 5, Feather 4, and ThreeIrons with 3. Redfox also led the Indians with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Four Winds shot 51 percent overall from the field (28-55), including 9-21 from the three point line. Feather had 4 of the 9 three’s. Dakota Prairie’s Hunter Sand scored a team high 12 points and a game high 9 rebounds. Four Winds who earned a first round bye improved to 19-1 on the season and will play New Rockford-Sheyenne in the District 7 title at 7:00 P.M. Monday night. Dakota Prairie (13-8) will face Warwick (2-19) in a Region qualifying game at 4:00 P.M. Monday.
Friday: New Rockford-Sheyenne (NR-S) Rockets 65 Lakota-Edmore (L-E) Raiders 44
The Rockets shot 52 percent from the field (29-55) and cruised by the Raiders in the opening round of the District 7 basketball tourney 65-44. Jack Schaefer torched the nets for a game high 27 points, and also had a game high 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Kaleb Haley added 12 points for the Rockets and a game high 5 assists. Brandt Ronningen led the Raiders with a team high 19 points and 3 steals. Randy Thompson added 16 points and a team high 7 rebounds.
Harvey-Wells County (H-WC) Hornets 63 Warwick Warriors 37
The Hornets led 20-15 at halftime but ran away from the Warriors in the second half, outscoring Warwick 43-22 to earn a 63-37 victory. Brian Fike led three players in double figures with a game high 21 points, 7 steals, and 4 assists. Ben Bertsch added 15 points (5 three pointers), and Payton Granger added 11 11 points and a team high 7 rebounds. Trevor Schimke added 6 points, 6 rebounds, and tied Fike with a game high 4 assists. The Warriors were led by Dustin Lovejoy’s 10 points and 3 steals. Joel Redfox had a game high 12 rebounds and added 9 points for the Warriors.
Dakota Prairie (DP) Knights 46 Benson County (BC) Wildcats 34
Dakota Prairie started off slowly but turned a 16-13 first half deficitaround in the second hald outscoring BC 33-18 to win 46-34 in the opening round of the District 7 tourney. The Knights were led by Hunter Sand’s game high 18 points, 16 rebounds, and 3 assists. Along with Sand’s double-double, Caleb Quanbeck added 12 points. BC was led by Keaton Nelsen with 15 points.
The final day of District7 will be on Monday starting at 4:00 P.M. with Dakota Prairie (13-8) taking on Warwick (2-19), region 4 qualifier. At 5:30 it will be Harvey-WC (9-12) vs. Benson County (6-14), region 4 qualifier, and the championship starting at 7:00 between New Rockford-Sheyenne (13-8) vs. top ranked Four Winds/Minnewaukan (19-1).
