N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Giving back is not something that can be taught, but it can be shown. The Jamestown Rotary Club hopes to demonstrate that in the community with their Book-It Forward Program.

The Book-It Forward program focuses on buying books for second grade students in all Jamestown Public Schools and St. John’s Academy. Jennifer Bollingberg and Dina Laskowski collaborated for  the event this year and says the program will benefit a lot of students.

“The Rotary Club along with the Prairie Reading Council, North Dakota Reading Association and North Dakota Students United will be provided 9 different classrooms of over 180 students with a book that they can read and pass along to another student.” Bollingberg stated.

Dina Laskowski is with the Prairie Reading Council and works with the rotary club to order and compile the books for  distribution by the Rotary Members. She was the main person that started up the Book-It Forward program over 8 years ago when she was a Rotarian.

“The funding is provided by the Rotary Club and everyone else collaborates from there. The good thing about Book-It Forward is putting books in children’s hands so it’s theirs to do with what they wish. From there, the children can keep the book or pass it on to another student. It’s a way for the children to give back because you feel good when you do something for someone else, it is a way of paying it forward.” Laskowski pointed out.

Books will be delivered to 2nd graders starting next week. The Rotary members of Jamestown will also be assisting in the distribution. The event will cost nothing for the students except their commitment to read the book and “book it forward.”
