N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota attorney general says a group of counties that share economic development services made a mistake when its representatives went into executive session at one of its meetings.

The South Central Dakota Regional Council is comprised of nine counties and operates under a joint powers agreement. The group’s executive board went behind closed doors during its May 2015 regular meeting to discuss the firing of an employee, the hiring or an independent contractor, and other issues.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says the council failed to announce the legal authority for the executive session and the discussions went beyond the subjects authorized by law. Stenehjem ordered the board to create and provide minutes of the session.
