scam-alert

CASS COUNTY, N.D. (CCSO) – The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to a new scam that has emerged in the Fargo-Moorhead area. This morning, several Cass County employees began receiving phishing texts on their county-issued cell phones. The same texts began hitting the personal telephones of county employees across all major carriers. The Sheriff’s Office believes this scam could begin to affect the general public as well. The texts appear to impersonate the North Dakota Department of Motor Vehicles (NDDOT) regarding supposed fines and a threat of license suspension if not paid.

The website the scammer texts links to is a fraudulent site set up to mimic the NDDOT’s website, and possibly used to collect victims’ credit card information. The NDDOT will never send messages like this to a constituent regarding fines; they would contact you via mail using official letterhead.
