Game One: Mayville State 2, Valley City State 0 (7 innings)

Mayville State and Valley City State were locked in a classic pitchers’ duel, with offense hard to come by in a game that featured just seven combined hits.

The Comets broke through in the third inning when VCSU starter Hunter Magnuson surrendered a leadoff double and walked three batters in the inning, giving Mayville State a 1-0 lead.

Mayville State added an insurance run in the sixth on Jack McQueen’s two-out RBI single. McQueen finished 2-for-2 at the plate.

Magnuson took the loss despite a strong outing, allowing just two runs over six innings while striking out nine. On the other side, Mayville State’s Garret Lundmark tossed a complete-game shutout, striking out nine, walking one and allowing only three hits.

VCSU threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting two runners on base, but Judson Seliskar struck out looking to end the game.

The second game of the doubleheader was a sharp contrast to the opener, as the teams combined for 24 hits in an offensive slugfest.

The Vikings responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead, but it was short-lived. The Comets opened the eighth with back-to-back home runs to knot the score at 7-7.

VCSU once again pulled ahead in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly, but Mayville State delivered the final blow in the ninth. Down to their last out, Chris Shopbell belted a two-out, two-run home run to put the Comets ahead for good.

Mayville State completed the sweep with the comeback victory.
