
REDFIELD, SD – While taking a break from conference play, University of Jamestown Baseball didn’t take a break from hot hitting.
The Jimmies rallied to defeat Briar Cliff in game one of a doubleheader Tuesday for a 10-9 win, then dropped the Chargers 15-4 in the second game.
Game 1: Jamestown 10, Briar Cliff 9 (7)
Jamestown (28-11) trailed 9-6 after Briar Cliff scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Triston Madison had an RBI double and Isaiah Roebuck delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth and UJ was down just 9-8.
Chase Burke, who had stolen home earlier in the game, led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk. After he stole second, Alex Alva was hit by a pitch. Ryan Muizelaar, with his fourth RBI of the game, tied the score at 9-9 with a single. Sy Steele bunted the runners to second and third, then Madison won the game with a single through the right side.
Muizelaar hit his team-leading 11th home run, a three-run blast, in the first inning.
Payton Hochhalter (1-0), the eighth Jimmie pitcher, retired the final out in the top of the seventh.
Cade Marquardt was three-for-five with four RBI for Briar Cliff (18-11).
Game 1: Jamestown 15, Briar Cliff 4 (7)
Ben Patton homered and drove in four, Madison drove in three and Burke homered as Jamestown (29-11) blew the game open with six-run innings in the third and fourth.
Roebuck had three hits and scored three runs and Ben Swenummson had two hits.
Freshman Nolan McCaffery, in his first varsity appearance, started and won, allowing three runs and five hits in four innings.
For Briar Cliff (18-12), Kyle Capece and Caleb St. Cyr hit home runs.
Jamestown will return to NSAA play later this week with games at Jack Brown Stadium against Dickinson State.
