VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – On Tuesday, March 25th, the Valley City Public School Board accepted a recommendation from the School Facility Advisory Committee and voted 5-0 to pass three resolutions that will call for a school construction referendum to be voted on by the citizens of the school district on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
Since the fall of 2021, the school district has looked into many options on how to best address the increasing deferred maintenance costs within our school facilities. The school district and school board engaged with stakeholders using a community survey in 2021 and hosted four public meetings between October 2021 and April 2023. In addition, the school district formed two different facility advisory committees in 2023 and 2025 and asked the committee members, representing citizens of the school district, to provide the school board with a recommendation on the school facilities. The feedback and recommendations in this process have continued to strongly suggest that the school board should call for a school construction referendum and allow the citizens of our school district to have a voice in the future of our facilities.
Following last night’s action by the Valley City Public School Board, a concerted effort will be initiated by the school district to provide factual, transparent, and timely information to the citizens of the school district. The district will be scheduling four public meetings held at the schools along with four additional question and answer sessions held both in-person and virtually in the community. The school district has also created a referendum webpage that will be accessible on the district website at www.hiliners.org beginning on or before Monday, March 31st. In the 76 days up to June 10th, the district will be sending referendum information and will be available to meet with any and all community members. Our communications, meetings, and information sharing WILL NOT suggest or tell anyone how to vote but rather ensure that every voter in our school district has the facts and necessary information to make an informed vote on June 10th.
Thank you in advance for engaging with our school district in the months ahead to ask questions, share feedback, and learn more about the proposed plans included in this school construction referendum. If prior to any of these public meetings, which will be scheduled for late April thru the beginning of June, you have questions or would like to request a meeting, please contact the district office at 701.845.0483 ext. 0 or email Superintendent Josh Johnson at josh.johnson@k12.nd.us.
We cordially invite you to visit our website at www.hiliners.org beginning on or before Monday, March 31st to learn more about this school construction referendum. Please plan to vote on June 10th.
