GLENDALE, AZ – Though much of this season has been difficult for University of Jamestown Men’s Volleyball, this team has a win it can always remember.
Jamestown rallied from two sets to one down Tuesday to upset Arizona Christian University 25-21, 20-25, 23-25, 25-23, 16-14 at the Firestorm Recreation Center.
Michal Niemiec notched a career-high 29 kills for the Jimmies with four assists, two aces, a block and five digs. Tomasz Swiderski had 21 kills, a solo block, a block assist, and seven digs. Gabriel Ocasio had 55 set assists, just one short of his career high.
In the first set, Jamestown (6-16) was down 15-14 before scoring three straight points on a kill by Swiderski, an ACU attack error, and another Swiderski kill. Later, an Ethan Hoffert ace staked Jamestown to a 20-16 lead followed by kills on the set’s last five points, including three by Niemiec, one by Myers and one by Swiderski. It rounded out a set where the Jimmies hit .458 and had 15 kills.
UJ also had 15 kills in the second set, but seven errors hurt them. Down 6-5, the Firestorm (4-9) scored eight of the next 10 points and maintained control.
Jamestown began the third set with a 4-1 lead and were tied at 10-10 before Arizona Christian authored an 8-3 run, led by three kills from Connor Monahan. Niemiec killed twice in a flurry of five straight points that tied the set at 18-18. Swiderski scored a kill for a 23-22 Jimmie lead before Paul Rolland rallied ACU with three straight kills to end the set and give the Firestorm the match lead.
The fourth set had Jamestown up 4-1 before ACU came back. After a 14-14 tie, Swiderski and Niemiec had kills to help UJ to an 18-15 lead. Four straight by the Firestorm had the home team up 19-18, but the Jimmies then scored three straight on two errors and a Markam Cook ace. Niemiec had a kill for a 22-20 Jamestown advantage, then an attack error and a bad set gave Jamestown set points. Arizona Christian saved three of them before Niemiec killed to force the deciding set.
ACU led 7-5 in the fifth, then Niemiec killed twice, the Firestorm committed an attack error and Swiderski killed and Jamestown was up 9-7. After a 9-9 tie, Niemiec and Swiderski each had two kills in a 5-2 run that set up match point at 14-11. Arizona Christian then had three straight kills from Caleb Merlino, Joel Romero and Rolland to knot the score at 14-14. But the Firestorm then committed a service error and an attack error to give the Jimmies back-to-back match wins for the first time this season.
Jamestown had 63 kills while Arizona Christian had 61. The Jimmies hit .253 and the Firestorm hit .264.
On Wednesday, Jamestown will face Ottawa University Arizona in Surprise.
