MAYVILLE (NewsDakota)- For the first time since the 2020-21 season, the Carrington Girls Basketball program is in a Regional Final.
A fourth quarter run broke open a close game and the second-seeded Carrington Cardinals defeated the third-seeded Thompson Tommies 61-50 in a Class A Region 2 Semifinal on Tuesday night at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse at Mayville State University.
The Cardinals rode their balance and three point shooting (4/6) to a halftime lead of 32-30, as Carrington (17-5) shot 52 percent (12/23) from the field in the opening sixteen minutes and then in the second half they pulled away with their ball pressure and high tempo, leading to Thompson shooting just 25% (6/24) after halftime and they wore out the Tommies (18-5), who had played on Monday night in a win over Hillsboro/Central Valley.
The Cardinals outrebounded Thompson 38-27 and Marah Johnson led four in double figures with 15. Addison Sage had a game-high 19 for the Tommies.
Carrington will face Devils Lake, who bested Grafton 67-46 in the other semifinal on Tuesday, in the 2025 Class A Region 2 Championship on Thursday night with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal beginning at 7:00 PM. The two teams split their regular season meetings, with the home team winning both.
