FARGO – Her first championship may not be her last.
In a first for Jamestown Blue Jay Girls Wrestling, eighth grader Kaydence Golding won the 124-pound state championship Friday in the NDHSAA Girls State Wrestling Individual Championships at the Fargodome.
Golding, who lost in a state championship match at 106 pounds a year ago as a seventh grader, completed a 50-1 season with a pin of Tenley Michel of Kenmare/Bowbells/Burke Central at 1:49 of the first period. On Thursday, Golding had pinned Bailee Campbell of Mandan, Avery Davidson of Northern Cass and Marlie Stremick of Pembina County North.
In two seasons, Golding, the daughter of University of Jamestown Women’s Wrestling Head Coach Amy Golding, is 70-5.
Golding was one of five Blue Jay girls competing in the state tournament. Grace Bercier was the only other wrestler to place, taking seventh at 170 pounds.
The only Jamestown boys wrestler to qualify for state, Lucas Schlepuetz, was eighth at 152 pounds.
