
MINOT – Two tight regular season games for Jamestown Blue Jay Boys Hockey against Mandan in the regular season made no difference at all on Thursday.
Nate Walz returned after missing nine games with an ankle injury and scored two goals and three assists. Parker Roelfsema had a goal and three assists as Jamestown dominated almost from the start in an 8-2 win over Mandan in the first round of the West Region boys hockey tournament at MAYSA Arena.
Only 16 seconds into their first powerplay of the game, Bennett Goehner scored at 3:18 of the first period for Jamestown (13-7-1-1), with the Vaughn Romsdal doubling the lead only 1:34 later.
Jackson Maddock scored 3:29 into the second period for a 3-0 Blue Jay lead, with Walz tipping in a Roelfsma shot at 8:09. Logan Renner tallied for Mandan (9-7-3-3) at 10:32, but a brilliant pass from behind the Brave net by Walz set up Maddock’s second goal of the period at 13:55 for a 5-1 Jamestown lead after two periods.
Roelfsma scored just 49 seconds into the third period for JHS, with Walz scoring at 3:02 for a 7-1 Jamestown lead. Carson Joersz scored with 4:06 remaining for Mandan, answered by a John Belzer goal with 3:05 to play.
Jamestown had 26 shots to Mandan’s 18. Leif Hanson made 16 saves in the Blue Jay net.
In a semifinal on Friday, Jamestown will face top seed Mandan, who defeated Dickinson 7-1 on Thursday. Broadcast coverage of the Blue Jays in the West Region boys hockey tournament will resume on Saturday on The Voice of the Blue Jays, Jamestown 107.1.
