CASSELTON, N.D. – From the opening tip, Central Cass overwhelmed Valley City, handing the Hi-Liners their fourth consecutive loss in a 61-41 defeat on the road.
Early on, Valley City’s defense kept the game within reach, as both teams battled through a defensive struggle in the first quarter. The Squirrels emerged with an 11-6 lead after the opening frame. However, the second quarter belonged entirely to Central Cass. The Squirrels knocked down four three-pointers in the period and outscored Valley City 22-10, sending the Hi-Liners into halftime trailing 33-16.
The offensive struggles continued for Valley City in the third quarter, as Central Cass locked in defensively on Bryson Heck and Miken Mattson, preventing the Hi-Liners from finding any rhythm. Entering the fourth quarter with the Squirrels still firmly in control, Heck finally broke out, scoring 12 points in the final frame. But the late surge was not enough, as Central Cass’ balanced attack carried them to the 61-41 victory.
Valley City will close out its home schedule Friday against the Oak Grove Grovers. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m., with the game available on 1490 AM, 96.3 FM KOVC, and online at NewsDakota.com.
