VALLEY CITY, ND (NewsDakota.com) A chaotic final possession and one of 18 offensive rebounds by Dakota State denied the Viking women another win over first-place Dakota State.
Abby Aslesen scored at the horn, but did not draw a foul with the Vikings down three, and Dakota State held on for a 67-66 win over the Vikings in Madison, SD.
The possession spinning out was one of two bad breaks for the Vikings in the final minute. The first came when the Vikings fouled for possession and induced two misses from Trojan guard Bria Wasmund.
But the Trojans secured their 18th offensive rebound of the day after the second miss, and Tabor Teel hit a pair of foul shots to push the lead back to three. After a Viking basket, foul, and two more made foul shots by Dakota State, the Vikings had one possession to tie the game.
Elyse Hebrink drove to the left block, but could not outlet the ball to the perimeter for a three-point shot. She found Aslesen, who drove and hit a layup, but without a foul, Dakota State held a one-point lead as the buzzer sounded.
The Vikings loss will put them in a position to need a win and help to host a first-round NSAA game. They will need Bellevue to lose out, and the Vikings must beat Mayville State Friday night in Mayville.
Aslesen finished with 16 points, co-leading the Vikings with Ellie Braaten, who had another solid game shooting, hitting 5-7 from the three-point line.
