VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 24, in partnership with the “What In The World is Going On” series, presents: Dr. Steven King (VCSU/BCHS) “Valley City: A WWII Heritage City” at 7 PM Thursday, February 20th at the Barnes County Museum.
On October 21st, 2024, the City of Valley City was informed that Valley City has been awarded one of only 50 designations by the National Park Service as North Dakota’s WWII Heritage Community.  These communities, whose service and sacrifice during the war, as well as since, prove a lasting legacy that exemplifies commemorating WWII.  Dr. King will talk about Valley City receiving the designation.  During the Second World War, the citizens of Valley City participated in the home front through scrap drives, war bonds, and stamp drives.  Valley City participated in two unique educational programs run by the federal government: the V-12 Program and the United States Cadet Nurse Corps. In addition, Herman Stern, Clifford J. Klein, Harriet Margolies, and Peggy Lee are notable contributors to the war effort.
Dr. Steven King serves as the President of the Barnes County Historical Museum and is a History Professor at Valley City State University. Dr. King moved to Valley City in 2005.
All Lectures are at the Barnes County Historical Society Museum and held in conjunction with Valley City State University. The lectures are free and open to the public. For more information contact Wes Anderson at 701-845-0966.
