JAMESTOWN – In the final day of the first Nelson Family Bubble Invitational, University of Jamestown Softball split two games on Sunday. The Jimmies held off a late rally to defeat Dakota Wesleyan 6-5, then had a 4-2 lead over Mayville State before the Comets scored four runs in the sixth inning for a 6-4 win.
Jamestown 6, Dakota Wesleyan 5
After DWU scored twice in the top of the second inning, Abby Blair hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the second to bring the Jimmies (4-3) within 2-1.
Kate Geiszler and Lauren Weigel drove in runs on fielder’s choices in a two-run fourth for UJ. Three more runs were plated in the fifth on an RBI single by Kayla Quintanilla and a two-run double by Blair.
DWU scored three runs in the sixth.
Hope Ransome (3-1) pitched six innings with seven strikeouts, five runs allowed and 10 hits. Maddie Hairgrove allowed two hits in the seventh, but earned her first save.
Mayville State 6, Jamestown 4
Jamestown (4-4) led 4-2 before Mayville State’s big sixth inning. Ryanne Bass had a bases-loaded walk before Madison Terres tied the game with an RBI single. Nevaeh Stinson gave the Comets the lead with a bases-loaded walk and then Leticia Herrera was hit by a pitch to force in another run.
Hairgrove (0-1) was charged with all four runs. Blair had pitched the first five innings, giving up two runs and six hits.
Quintanilla hit a two-run homer for the Jimmies. Weigel had an RBI triple and Spaeth knocked in a run with a single.
Jamestown will host Minot State in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 5:00 PM inside the Nelson Family Bubble.
