LISBON N.D. – Miken Mattson caught fire from beyond the arc, draining seven three-pointers en route to a 30-point performance as Valley City snapped a three-game losing streak with a 65-47 victory over Lisbon on Tuesday night.
Mattson’s hot hand ignited midway through the first quarter, scoring the Hi-Liners’ final 11 points of the frame after Bryson Heck opened the game with seven. Lisbon struggled to match Valley City’s pace early but stayed within reach behind a pair of three-pointers from Lincoln Adair, trailing 18-14 after one.
The Hi-Liners took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Broncos 19-8 as Mattson added three more triples to push his first-half total to 20 points. Lisbon junior Cameron Cordero provided a late spark with a pair of baskets, but the Broncos entered halftime down 37-22.
Lisbon fought back in the third quarter behind Cordero and Colby Maus, who combined for three three-pointers, chipping away at the deficit. However, a late Valley City surge kept the Hi-Liners in command with a 49-36 lead heading into the fourth.
Valley City opened the final period on a 9-1 run, putting the game out of reach. Cordero finished with a team-high 21 points, including a late three, but his efforts weren’t enough to overcome Mattson and Heck, as the Hi-Liners cruised to victory.
Valley City returns to action on Friday, Jan. 7, when they host Central Cass. The game will be broadcast on 1490 AM/96.3 FM KOVC and streamed online at NewsDakota.com.
