Lyle Eugene Rodin, the son of Fred and Inga (Olson) Rodin, was born March 3 rd or 4 th ,
1937 at Mercy Hospital in Valley City. He attended school at Greenland School through 7 th
grade. At an early age, he had built a good, hard work ethic working various jobs as a farm hand
and mechanic. On October 27 th , 1957 Lyle married the love of his life, Dorothy Alber, at St.
John’s Missouri Synod Church, southeast of Marion. They made their home in Marion living in
a small trailer 28’x8’. Lyle worked for Miles Trapp at the implement business until 1961 when
the business was destroyed by fire. They moved to Valley City for a short time where Lyle
worked for Geislers Implement until they returned to Marion, and Lyle purchased and operated
the Texaco Repair Shop. In 1974, he sold the Texaco Shop and built a new shop for Lyle’s Truck
Sales and Service. Those services consisted of mechanical repairs, mounting box and hoist,
painting and selling trucks to surrounding farmers in the area. He repaired many truck tires
throughout his life and sold and repaired Dixon Zero Turn lawn mowers. If you needed a part,
he either had it, or knew where to find one. Lyle was always on the go and was often referred to
as “Speed”. For several years, he operated and repaired school buses. In 1976, they purchased
the grocery store from Paul and Marjorie Sitz, which was known as L&D Grocery, until a storm
destroyed the building. In 1987, Lyle started farming with his son Darin, as his other son Brad
had taken over Lyles Truck Sales and started Brad’s Body Shop. Farming was something Lyle
had always wanted to do. He had a passion for working the fields, harvesting, raising cattle,
haying and tending to his cats and dogs. Lyle served on the Marion School Board, Marion City
Council, Marion Fire Department where he was Chief in 1974 and was a member of the Marion
Lutheran Church. Lyle enjoyed spending time with his family, watching his kids and grandkids
sporting events, hunting and fishing, playing cards, coffee hour with his buddies, attending races
and handing out suckers to his grandchildren. He greatly enjoyed driving his red pickup looking
for cans. Lyle was known for tinkering under a hood, repairing cars and trucks, witty jokes and
finding treasures from another person’s junk pile.
