JAMESTOWN – University of Jamestown Women’s Basketball registered an important win at home on Friday.  For the Jimmie men, a comeback against the NSAA leader wasn’t enough.

Kate Cordes matched a career-high with 32 points as the Jamestown women rallied from an early deficit to defeat Dickinson State 78-67 at Harold Newman Arena.  The Blue Hawk men survived a second-half rally by the Jimmies for a 77-69 win that put DSU two games in front of UJ for first place in the North Star.

Women: Jamestown 78, Dickinson State 67
Dickinson State began well, taking a 13-3 lead in the first 3:59. Jamestown then used a 12-3 run to move within one point at 16-15 and trailed 22-18 after one quarter.

Jamestown (16-5, 6-4 NSAA) continued to hit three-pointers, knocking down nine in the first half. Cordes scored 18 in the first half. Kate Busek hit two three-pointers in a 12-5 run to end the half and Jamestown led 41-33 at halftime.

In the third quarter, as Jayden Wiest scored nine, the Jimmies built the lead to as much as 17 and were up 62-52 after three quarters.

Dickinson State (7-14, 2-8) had five points from Samantha Oase and a three-pointer from Anhelica Shanrock in a 14-0 run that bridged the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth to cut the Jamestown lead to 62-59. Then, Cordes scored seven points in a 16-4 run that clinched the game for the Jimmies.

Cordes was 12-of-21 shooting and hit six-of-14 three-pointers. She also had five rebounds and four assists. Busek hit four treys and had 14 points, also with five rebounds and four assists. Wiest scored 12, all in the second half, with three three-pointers.

Kayden Steele scored 15 for Dickinson State. Shanrock scored 12 and Oase had 10.

Through Friday, Jamestown led Mayville State and Bellevue by a game and a half for second place in the NSAA.

Men: Dickinson State 77, Jamestown 69
Dickinson State (14-8, 9-1 NSAA) had a 16-0 first-half run to open up a 19-point halftime lead, then stretched the lead to 24 early in the second half before Jamestown (12-9, 7-3) had a large comeback to move to within six.

The Jimmies led 15-11 with 11:12 left in the half before the Blue Hawks went on their first tear on three-pointers by Jaiden Wright, Trey Stevens and Kose Egbule, a paint jumper by Gus Wright, two free throws by Egbule and another three by Stevens. That helped Dickinson State to a 42-23 halftime lead.

With 15:53 left, a Gus Wright bucket gave Dickinson State a 54-28 lead. Over the next 8:50, Jamestown, led by Silas Bennion, outscored DSU 28-8 and were within 62-56. Just over three minutes later, John Evans and Stevens had back-to-back scores in the paint and the Blue Jawks led 68-57. Jamestown was again within six with a minute left, but came no closer.

Cordell Stinson led Dickinson State with 17 points and nine rebounds. Stevens and Aidan Fishell each tallied 13. Egbule had 10 and seven rebounds.

Bennion scored 19 for the Jimmies, all in the second half. Jimmy Llinas had his eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Owen Hektner scored 10, all in the second half.

The win was crucial for Dickinson State, who moved two games in front of Jamestown for the NSAA lead. Also, the Blue Hawks have clinched the season series over the Jimmies, the first determinator in a head-to-head tiebreak.

The Jimmies will next play on the road on Friday, February 7 against rival VCSU in Valley City. Coverage will begin at around 5:00 PM on Q101.
