CARRINGTON (NewsDakota)- Adversity is defined as “difficulties or misfortune”. With how many different players for Carrington have missed time through sickness in the month of January, Coach Jason Otto and his team know all about adversity. Yet they keep finding ways to win.
Senior Grady Idland capped an eleven-point second half comeback with a game-tying three in the final seconds to force overtime, and the shorthanded Cardinals, playing only six players, ended January with a 66-65 overtime win over Northern Cass on Friday night in the East Gym.
The game started with a pacy first quarter that saw the Jaguars (10-4) lead 18-17 after one, and thanks to six first half threes, they led 32-28 at the half. Northern Cass opened the second half scoring twelve of the first seventeen points of the frame for a 44-33 lead. But Carrington (10-4) responded immediately with a 13-0 run and, from that point forward, neither team led by more than three. With the Jaguars up by three with fifteen seconds left, the Cardinals grabbed a missed free throw, Josh Bickett missed a three but the ball bounced to Idland, who buried the triple from the deep left corner to force overtime.
The extra session see-sawed as well, with neither team ever leading by more than two in a game that saw fifteen ties and eleven lead changes. Brody Zieske had a shot to win the game, but his wide open three was long and Carrington survived with their first OT win since defeating New Rockford-Sheyenne last season.
