CARRINGTON (NewsDakota)- High school athletics are meant to teach young people lessons that they will be able to take with them for the rest of their lives. And for Carrington Head Coach Andy Braaten and Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier Head Coach Rory Entzi, Thursday was an entire book of lessons.
On the night Carrington honored five outstanding seniors, the Cardinal girls prevailed despite not being at their best in a 55-45 win for their eleventh consecutive win and seventeenth straight home win. Those lessons may very well pale in comparison to what the Rebels players learned.
Coach Entzi suffered a slip on a sheet of ice early on Thursday, breaking his fibula. He then went in for surgery, and incredibly coached his team in the game on Thursday night in an absolutely incredible display of determination and toughness.
It was a tight game through the first quarter until freshman Aniston Hornaert scored seven of her team-high thirteen in the second quarter as Carrington took a lead as large as eleven in leading 31-25 at the half. In the second half, the Rebels (9-7) continuously fought back to close within one, but could never take the lead as Carrington (15-1) only allowed four second-half field goals. Libby Mathern led E-K-M with sixteen.
Carrington honored seniors Kenadie Pazdernik, Brynn Smith, Edyn Hornaert, Isabel Wendel, and Kaydence Van Ray both in a pregame ceremony and by starting them in the game.
The Cardinals are next in action Monday night, in what could be #1 vs #2, as they travel to Minot to take on the South Prairie-Max Royals with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal beginning at 6:45 PM
