Oakes, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The Tornadoes boys and girls got the week started with District 1 wins. The girls are playing their final District games getting started on Monday with a win against the Wyndmere-Lidgerwood Warbirds. The boys just got through the first half of the District season going undefeated inside of the District after beating Richland.
Girls:
The girls got started slowly on Monday as the Warbirds jumped out to a 9-2 lead however Molly Sitzler and Kassidy Jackson would team up to get Oakes to a 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Both teams would battle hard in the 2nd as no one was able to get too much going inside but the teams combined for a total of 6 treys between them. The Warbirds would find themselves ahead late leading 19-16 but Sitzler would drop a 3 which was followed by Emmerson Johnson hitting a 3. Hailey Dethlefsen would tie it up with under a minute to go in the half however as she hit a 3 ball to make it 22-22 going into the locker rooms.
The Warbirds would stifle the Tornadoes offense in the 3rd quarter as Oakes couldn’t get to the paint without turning the ball over this allowed Wyndmere/Lidgerwood to get a 7 point lead at the end of the quarter leading 36-29. Oakes would dominate in the 4th to battle back and get the win as they only allowed 2 points forcing the Warbirds to go 1/10 from the field. Oakes would went 5/12 from the field in the quarter to get the win 43-38.
The leading all around scorer was Valerie Mendoza who went 4/12 and 2/4 to get 13 points. The leading scorer for Oakes and the Bank North Player of the Game was Molly Sitzler who went 4/6 from the field and 2/2 from the line getting 12 points.
Boys:
The boys got started with a huge 1st quarter. They went 10/17 from the field to collect 22 points limiting the Colts to 3/16 from the field to take a 22-7 lead through the 1st. Oakes would continue to control the game as they’d buld that lead to 36-13 forcing Richland to go 6/30 from the field through out the first half of play. Leading Oakes in the 1st qas Eddie Garza who had 10 points.
The Colts would fight back in the 3rd with Julian Frye dropping back to back treys. Garza however would be a one man wrecking machine however as he’d score 10 on the quarter to expand the lead further to 54-28. The Tornadoes would then set the pace in the 4th once again as they brought in bench and jv players to win the game 71-36.
The leading all around scorer would be Eddie Garza who collected 22 points on the night going 10/16 from the field and 2/2 from the line. He’d earn the Bank North Player of the Game.

Next up for the girls is the Richland Colts in Colfax on Thursday January 30th with pregame on KDDR The Tornado beginning at 6:45 pm and tip off scheduled for 7:00 pm. A win from the Tornadoes would lock them into the #2 seed in the District 1 Tournament.
Next for the boys is the Wyndmere-Lidgerwood Warbirds on Friday January 31st with pregame heard on 106.1 Thunder Country at 6:45 pm and tip of scheduled for 7:00 pm.
