CARRINGTON (NewsDakota)- It’s not every day you get to do something for the first time ever, but when offered the chance, you may as well take it.
That is exactly what the third-ranked Carrington Cardinal girls basketball team did on Tuesday, upending second-ranked Devils Lake for the first time in program history with a 68-55 win in the East Gymnasium for their tenth consecutive victory.
In front of a standing-room-only home crowd, the Cardinals (14-1, 7-1) got off to a nervy start, falling behind 7-0, but that was as good as it would get for the Firebirds (12-2, 5-1) and by the end of the first quarter, Devils Lake had only a 14-11 lead.
As halftime approached, it was a one point game before freshman Aniston Hornaert buried a three right before the buzzer for a 27-23 Cardinal lead at the half. And as the team rode that momentum into the second half, freshman Marah Johnson scored all twelve of her points and senior Isabel Wendel added all seven of her points as Carrington pulled away and never trailed after halftime.
The win was Carrington’s third ranked win this season and sixteenth consecutive home win dating back to last season and over the last ten years the Cardinals are an astonishing 77-15 at home.
Carrington are back in action on Thursday as they host defending Class B runner-up Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal beginning at 6:45 PM
