MAYVILLE, ND  (NewsDakota.com)  The Viking women rolled to their second straight win over teams receiving national recognition, while the men hit the offensive skids in a basketball split with Mayville State Friday.

Valley City State won an 84-66 decision over the Comets, a team receiving votes in the latest poll, and a team ranked in the top 15 earlier this year.  The win followed a 91-75 win over #24 University of Jamestown last Saturday.

The Viking men fell behind 18-7, rallied to lead, then fell behind by 19, settling for a 65-48 loss.

WOMEN:  VCSU 84, MaSU 66

Freshman Abby Aslesen finished with 10 of her game-high 26 in the fourth quarter to close out a terrific performance against the Comets.

Aslesen scored 10 in the opening quarter, then gave way to reigning NAIA National Offensive Player of the Week Ashlyn Diemert, who hit five three-point shots in the opening half, ending the half with 18.  Diemert was 11-11 for three at UJ last Saturday.

After Elyse Hebrink bouyed a sluggish third-quarter offense with six in the frame, Aslesen added two more field goals and shot 5-6 from the foul line to end with 26.

Ellie Braaten finished a rebound shy of a triple-double, with 10 points, 10 assists, and nine boards.

MEN:  MaSU 65, VCSU 48

A game that was offensively lethargic for both teams throughout saw the Vikings fall behind 18-7, then rally for a 15-1 run to take a 23-19 edge, ending the opening half leading 25-22.  Tyrel Creger hit two threes in the rally, and Lamar Grayson scored seven, with Odier Olange adding six, before the break.

But the wheels fell off the offense in the second half.  The Vikings shot 1-10 from the three-point line in the second half, finishing 16.7% for the game, and turned the ball over 20 times on teh night will giving up 11 offensive rebounds.

Mayville State still trailed the Vikings until just before the media time out.  But John White, Jr. scored 14 of his game-high 20 after halftime, including hitting four threes that took Comet leads to nine, then 13, and eventually 19.

Grayson led the Vikings with 18 points, with Olange adding 13 and Creger scoring 10.

The Viking women are now 3-5 in NSAA play, 11-9 overall.  The men fall to 1-7 in league play, 10-10 overall.  Both teams host Bellevue University next Friday and Dakota State next Saturday.
