VALLEY CITY, N.D. (VCPR) – The George and Audrey Gaukler Family Foundation has generously donated over 4 acres of land along with $50,000 to Valley City Parks and Recreation for the development of the Hidden Pond Trail, a new recreational trail designed to provide both educational and outdoor experiences for the community. Work on the trail is set to begin in the spring of 2025. Circling a natural spring-fed pond, Hidden Pond Trail will feature educational signage to inform visitors about local wildlife and ecosystems, wildflower and native plant areas, and several benches placed along the path for rest and reflection. The trail will span just under .5 miles, offering a scenic and peaceful outdoor experience for residents and visitors alike. Future expansion possibilities include fun and interactive elements such as painted birdhouses, natural play features, and community gardens, adding even more charm and educational value to the space.
“We are incredibly grateful for the George and Audrey Gaukler Family Foundation’s generosity and commitment to enhancing outdoor recreation opportunities in Valley City,” said Tyler Jacobson, Executive Director of Valley City Parks and Recreation. “This donation allows us to create a space where people can connect with nature, learn about the local environment, and enjoy the beauty of our area. We are incredibly excited to expand on our outdoor recreation offerings and look forward to beginning this project this spring.”
George met with the VCPR staff and board on Thursday, January 23rd, to sign the deed to the land. “I’m thrilled that Valley City Parks and Recreation shares the vision I have for this trail to foster education and creativity,” said George Gaukler. “It’s an honor to share this land with the community, and I’m excited to see it flourish as a space that inspires learning, exploration, and connection.”
Dick Gulmon, VCPR Park Board President shares, “The donation of the Hidden Pond Trail by the George and Audrey Gaukler Family Foundation is an incredible gift to our community. We are committed to making this trail an engaging and enjoyable experience for everyone, ensuring it becomes a cherished destination for all who visit.”
To further engage the community, Valley City Parks and Recreation is planning to host a Volunteer Week in the spring of 2025 where local businesses, organizations, and residents can contribute to the development of the Hidden Pond Trail. Volunteer opportunities will include cleanup efforts and hands-on projects such as the creation or installation of trail features.
