MADISON, SD – Only one trip was set for Jamestown Jimmies Basketball to Dakota State in this regular season.  Maybe that’s just as well.

UJ hoops had a frustrating Friday evening.  Jamestown’s women stayed close and had a halftime lead, but sixth-ranked Dakota State took the lead after a run that began the third quarter and held on for a 69-63 win at the DSU Fieldhouse.  The Jimmie men, playing without post player and leader Jimmy Llinas, saw Dakota State hit 14 three-pointers and win 83-60, snapping the Jimmies’ six-game winning streak.

Women: (6)Dakota State 69, Jamestown 63
Two buckets each by Hannah Hagel and Jessika Lofstrom, plus six points from Kate Cordes, had the Jimmies (14-5, 4-4 NSAA) up 18-15 through one quarter.

DSU (15-3, 7-0) started the second quarter with the first seven points, but Cordes hit six straight later for a 35-29 Jimmie lead. After another 7-0 run by the Trojans, a Jayden Wiest three-pointer with 27 seconds left in the half gave Jamestown a 38-36 halftime lead.

The third quarter began with a 9-0 run by DSU on two layups by Bria Wasmund, followed by two layups and a free throw by Tabor Teel. Jamestown stayed within two at 50-48 through the third.

Angela Slattery hit two three-pointers and Teel had one in a 9-3 run for the Trojans to start the final quarter. Cordes hit a three with 2:24 left and UJ was down just 64-63. Cierra Watkins nailed a three-pointer with 1:14 left and Teel hit two last free throws in the last 30 seconds.

Slattery scored 21 for Dakota State. Teel notched 19 points and 13 rebounds. Wasmund had 10 points with four assists and five steals.

Cordes scored 23 for the Jimmies with six rebounds and four assists. Lofstrom hit for 11 with seven rebounds.

Jamestown now has back-to-back losses for the first time this season. Dakota State has now won 13 in a row this season and 20 consecutive NSAA home games, dating back to the 2021-22 season.

Men: Dakota State 83, Jamestown 60
Dakota State (8-11, 1-6 NSAA) kept nailing three-pointers and put the game out of reach by the midway point of the second half in breaking a seven-game losing streak.

Lane Tietz hit two threes and scored 20 to lead the Trojans. Aiden Jensen, a Mount Marty transfer who returned home to Madison, where he starred for the high school Bulldogs, scored a career-high 19 points and hit five-of-seven from beyond the arc.

After scoring the game’s first five points, the Jimmies (11-8, 6-2 NSAA) never led again and were held to 38 percent shooting. DSU drilled 14-of-32 three-pointers and shot 52 percent overall.

Silas Bennion scored 17 for UJ. Anthony Walters registered 11 points. Carson Woodford scored seven points and eight rebounds. However, Jamestown was held to a season-low point total. Llinas did not make the trip with the Jimmies. He is afflicted by the flu bug that has hit the UJ campus hard this week.

Bellevue edged Dickinson State in overtime 82-81, so the Jimmies remain one game out of the Blue Hawks’ NSAA lead.

Both Jimmie teams will look for better on Saturday against the Bellevue Bruins in Bellevue, Nebraska. Coverage will begin at 2:30 PM on The Voice of the Jimmies, Jamestown 107.1.
