Oakes, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The Tornado’s boys and girls basketball teams both won the final games of the week last week with the Girls beating #10 Sargent County on Thursday and the boys picking up a momemtum boosting win on Friday in Fairmount.

Girls

The girls responded after losing 2 straight games by beating the #10 team in the state in the Sargent County Bulldogs.

The game started out slowly for both teams as no one was able to build anything much on offense with turnovers and jump balls reigning supreme. After the 1st quarter of play the game was tied 12-12. The Bulldogs would then hold Oakes to 1/11 in the 2nd quarter allowing them to take a 22-16 lead. However no one shot well in the 1st half with Oakes going 6/22 from the field and 4/7 from the line while Sargent County went 5/25 from the field but their 12/18 from the free throw line allowed for the lead.

The Tornadoes would get the ball rolling in the 3rd quarter with Kassidy Jackson dropping a huge 3 ball however Lilliana Lee of the Bulldogs would respond with her own 3 ball. Neither team would do much for a couple minutes before Brianna Schmitz dropped a classic 3 point play and Kassidy Jackson would drop back to back 3 balls to give Oakes an even bigger lead. The quarter would also end with Molly Sitzler getting 5 points in the span of 45 seconds to give Oakes a 33-29 lead. Oakes would then hold on in the 4th quarter to win 44-37.

The leading all around scorer would be Kassidy Jackson with 13 points going 5/9 from the field and earning the Bank North Player of the Game. The leading scorer for Sargent County was Lee with 11 going 5/11 from the field.

Next up for the Lady Tornadoes is Enderlin on Thursday January 21st at 7:00 pm on KDDR The Tornado.

Boys

The boys picked up their second straight win and second district win of the season as they rode a solid 2nd and 3rd quarter to victory over the Tri-State Tigers.

The game started a little slow with no one able to score for about 3 minutes before Oakes would eventually take the lead and build a 13-10 lead through the 1st. Oakes would then go 9/14 in the 2nd quarter being lead by Beau Thorpe who would drop 7 points going 3/4 from the field. Tri-State would have no response as they went 6/17 from the field allowing for a 33-23 lead at the half. Oakes would shoot 15/28 in the first half while the Tigers went 10/29 from the field and 5/6 from the line.

The 3rd quarter was the Thorpe show as he’d drop 15 points on the quarter going 5/8 from the field and 2/2 from the line to help lead Oakes to a 56-30 lead through the 3rd quarter. Oakes would then just maintain their lead in the 4th quarter to win the game  62-38.

Beau Thorpe led all around scoring with 22 going 8/19 from the field and 2/2 from the line also earning the Bank North Player of the Game. Carson Sebek led Tri-State in scoring with 8 going 4/6 from the field.
