Gerald Kent Nelson was born on October 17, 1934, in Valley City, ND, to Alfred and Mildred (Velure) Nelson. He graduated from College High and initially attended college before beginning work at Valley City Grocery. Starting in the office, Jerry quickly learned the trade, eventually taking on bookkeeping responsibilities and serving as office manager for many years. In 1975, he and Phyllis purchased the business, which they operated until retiring in 1992, marking 42 years in the grocery business.
On October 28, 1955, Jerry married Phyllis Scott in Wimbledon, ND, after meeting at College High. They shared 69 wonderful years together.
Jerry was deeply involved in the Eagles organization, where he was a member for 57 years. He held numerous positions on the local board and within the state organization, including serving as Dakota State Secretary for over 20 years. One of his proudest accomplishments was his induction into the Eagles Hall of Fame. Jerry and Phyllis attended many state and national Eagles conventions throughout the years.
A devoted sports fan, Jerry cheered for the Minnesota Vikings and Twins. He was known for his meticulous record-keeping, noting game scores, dates, and appointments in his pocket calendar. In his later years, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and attending their events.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his sons, Michael and Rod (Kathy), both of Valley City; his daughter, Joyce (Kevin) Kelly of St. Paul, MN; his grandchildren, Ryan (Chrissy) Nelson, Lance (Samantha) Nelson, and Jarod Nelson (Emily Fletcher); and four great-grandchildren.
