JAMESTOWN – Important games for University of Jamestown Basketball were both important wins.

Samantha Paulsen tied a career high with 18 points as the UJ women avenged an earlier loss by defeating Mayville State 81-70 at Harold Newman Arena.  The Jimmie men erased a four-point deficit with a game-ending 16-6 run in an 88-82 win over the Comets.

Women: (24)Jamestown 81, Mayville State 70
As Jamestown (14-3, 4-2 NSAA) scored the game’s first 12 points, Mayville State missed their first 14 shots as Jamestown stored to a 22-8 lead after one quarter and 38-22 at halftime.

Behind a 35-point third quarter, Mayville State (13-5, 3-3) came within three through three at 60-57.

After a Taylor Hill three with 8:55 left, the Comets were down just 65-63. Jamestown then scored the next 14 points on field goals by Paulsen, Jessika Lofstrom, Jayden Wiest, another by Paulsen, a bucket and two free throws by Wiest, a three-pointer by Hali Savela and a Lofstrom free throw.

Paulsen also had seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Kate Cordes scored 14 points. Lofstrom tallied 13. Megan Oswald had 11.

Mackenzie Hughes led Mayville State with 20 points and Alex Page poured in 16 with six assists.

The Jimmies and Comets have split their first two of three regular season games.

Men: Jamestown 88, Mayville State 82
With 4:30 left, Jamestown (10-7, 5-1 NSAA) was down 76-72, but Silas Bennion scored with 3:08 left. Anthony Walters then followed with a steal and three-pointer. Cole Glasgow nailed a three-pointer with 1:24 remaining for an 84-77 UJ lead.

Jamestown led by 45-39 at halftime, then Mayville State (12-7, 3-3) took turns with the lead with UJ before taking their four-point lead with 7:13 to go on an Artis Chapman three-pointer.

Bennion scored 24 with four rebounds and four assists. Walters hit three three-pointers and registered 19. Jimmy Llinas scored 10 with 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.

JJ White scored 24 and Justin Fisher dropped in 20 for Mayville State, who played without Darren Jones, the NSAA’s leading scorer and rebounder.

Jamestown will host VCSU on Saturday at Harold Newman Arena. Coverage will begin at 2:30 PM on Q101.
